Abstract

Currently, female participation is expanded in all spheres of life, with this, the abandonment of the patriarchal prototype and early marriage become increasingly common, as women aim to achieve financial independence, employment opportunities and the decision to want or not to have children. In this way, it is understood the reason for the decrease in birth rates and the postponement of motherhood. Objective: Address factors by which women have chosen to postpone motherhood and the difficulties and consequences this can result. Materials and Methods: This is a narrative, exploratory and descriptive literature review. Theses, periodicals, books, and articles that can be found on scientific websites were used. Results and Discussion: According to the studies found, women have postponed pregnancy because they were able to expand their participation in society and in the job market associated with the existence of more resources for birth control. Pregnancy after 35 years of age is unsafe for the woman and the fetus, as these can suffer complications as the woman’s fertility begins to decline, increasing the probability of congenital syndromes and fetal microsomes, as well as the greater the possibility of the pregnant woman develops gestational diabetes mellitus, gestational arterial hypertension and pre-eclampsia. Conclusion: Based on the studies discussed, it is possible to affirm that prioritizing individual projects has a great influence on postponing motherhood, however, the higher the age of the pregnant woman, the greater the chances of complications. The woman and everyone around her should be aware of the risks that may arise in late pregnancy, as well as carry out prenatal consultations and exams throughout the pregnancy, to receive necessary guidance and care.
