Guidelines for the Authors

Instructions to authors for preparation and submission of articles

Before starting the submission process, authors should check the compliance of all items listed below. Submissions that do not comply with the standards will be returned to the authors for adjustments.

When submitting the article to the e-mail, the corresponding author should also send a letter to the Editorial Committee containing the justification of the originality, importance of the work and other observations that are judged pertinent (e.g.: it is part of a dissertation or thesis, it originates from a course conclusion work or a monography.

These are the recommendations of BJHP (ISSN 2596-321X) for arrangements before submission:
1. ORCID number of the authors: at least of the corresponding author. Information and free registration at https://orcid.org
2. Full name, affiliation institution and e-mail address of all the authors.
3. Regularity of registration in the National System of Management of Genetic Heritage and Associated Traditional Knowledge - SisGen when pertinent. Check at https://www.mma.gov.br/patrimoniogenetico.html and orientations in https://sisgen.gov.br/download/Manual_SisGen.pdf
4. Approval number in research ethics committees involving human beings or animals, when applicable.
5. References must follow the rules of the Brazilian Association of Technical Norms (ABNT). Verify at least 50% of the references cited have DOI numbers linked.

INSTRUCTION

Conditions

Papers written in English or Portuguese will be accepted. Papers submitted in English will have preference and should also have a title and abstract in Portuguese.

Manuscripts must be original and unpublished, and must not be under review or submitted to another journal.

The manuscript should be sent in Word for the general format of the Journal.

Figures, images and copies of documents (e.g.: CEUA, CEP, SIGEP) should be attached individually in separate files.  Images and graphics should be in JPG, PNG or TIFF format, and the file name should include their reference in Arabic numerals (e.g., Figure 2) according to their citation in the text. The format for copies of documents must be in PDF. The tables must be sent in the correct sequence of the text, inside the article in word and in editable format (do not send or attach as image).  Image captions, tables and graphics must come in the correct sequence of the text in the word document.

For tables it is optional in the text or separately.

For review and opinion articles, the items methodology and results are no longer required.

There are no restrictions on the size of the manuscript and number of references used. However, the coherence and necessity of the information/text presented will be evaluated for quality.

First page: titles, authors, affiliation and corresponding author.

Page 2 onwards: other topics in continuous text.

A4 paper, right, left, top and bottom margins of 2.5 cm and numbered pages.

Citations of articles in the text: last name in capital letters followed by comma and year. For two authors put a comma between them. For three or more authors, put the last name of the first author followed by "et al." followed by comma and year.

Title

In the official language of the article: Portuguese or English

Bold

Initial only of the first word in capital letter, except for proper and scientific names

Title in second language: English or Portuguese

Authors

First Name, Abbreviated Middle Name and Last Name. Authors separated by semicolon and superscript Arabic numeral after each author, indicating the institution. If the institution is the same for all authors, it is not necessary to use a number.

Indication of corresponding author by asterisk.

Affiliation

Numbered with the name of the linked institution (including department or sector, if any), city, confederation unit, country.

Corresponding Author

Indicated by asterisk containing full name, address, e-mail and contact phone number, ORCID number.

Abstract and keywords

In Portuguese and English.

Maximum 260 words, containing a brief introduction that justifies the hypothesis of the work, objective(s), main methods with minimum detail to the understanding of the work performed, most relevant results and conclusion.

Keywords: at the end of the abstract, include three to six keywords, separated by semicolons (only the first initial capital letter), using the terms presented in the structured vocabulary (DeCS), available

Introduction

Brief review of the literature justifying the hypothesis, relevance and innovation of the work. Inform the objectives of the work at the end. A maximum of two pages is recommended.

Methodology

Description of the methods and protocols used, in order to allow their reproduction, and may refer to an article already published of the methodology. It must contain an approval number in ethics committees of research involving human beings or animals, when applicable. Authorization from the competent organ (SISGEN in Brazil) for biological materials and of natural origin. Materials should be informed as they appear in the methods. Generic denomination or IUPHAR for drugs and IUPAC for chemical reagents.

Results

Presented following the order presented in the methodology whenever possible. Logical sequence that allows the understanding of the construction of the results. The text should not repeat or duplicate the results of figures and tables.

Discussion

Together or separated from the results item. Present the relevance and innovation of the data obtained in the light of the literature. A maximum of three pages is recommended.

Conclusions

It should be written emphasizing the fulfillment of the initial hypothesis, its importance and perspectives.

Acknowledgements and grants

Indicate the names of people who contributed in some way to the work, but who did not participate as authors. Inform the funding institutions containing the project or scholarship number, when applicable.

Conflict of interest statement

Indicate when there is a conflict of interest including the minimum information necessary for their understanding. Write "nothing to declare" when this is not the case.

Reference Guidelines

A maximum of 50 quotations are recommended in all the work.  At least 50% of the references cited must have the DOI number linked.  The style and format of the references are based on the norms of the Brazilian Association of Technical Standards (ABNT).

MODELS OF REFERENCES:

Journal article:

Cite the name of all authors in the article: last name followed by a comma and initials of names separated by a period (without spaces). Separate authors by semicolons. Title of the article with the initials of the first capital word only, except for proper and scientific names. Name of the journal in full and in bold, followed by a comma, volume, number, initial and ending page and the year. 

Example:

Corporative Authors: in order to reference corporative authors (government agencies, entities, associations, among others), we have the following examples:

How to reference a monography considered as a whole with an author:

LAST NAME, First name(s) (initials). Title in bold. Edition. Place of publication (City): Publisher, year of publication.

With two authors, example:

When there are more than three authors, only the first one is referred to, followed by the Latin expression "et al." (no comma), example:

Academic papers: Master's thesis documents and doctoral theses may be cited as long as they are in public repository. In order to reference them:

SURNAME. First name (initials). Thesis title: subtitle (if any) in bold. Year of presentation. Type (Degree) - Institution where it was defended, place (City).

Before sending the paper for submission, it is important that the authors analyze whether the article has contemplated all the items recommended in the international protocols for writing scientific papers, according to each study delegation (All of these protocols can be accessed at http://www.equator-etwork.org/). As an example:

 

1) Systematic reviews with or without meta-analysis should follow PRISMA recommendations (preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses);
2) Preclinical studies in animals should follow ARRIVE (Animal Research: Reporting of In Vivo Experiments);
3) Observational studies should follow the recommendations of STROBE (Strengthening the reporting of observational studies in epidemiology). See in the site below that there are variation in the check list, according to the type of observational study (case-control, cross-sectional and cohort);
4) Clinical trials should follow the recommendations of the CONSORT Statement (Consolidated Standards of Reporting Trials);
5) Economic evaluation studies should follow the recommendations of CHEERS (Consolidated Health Economic Evaluation Reporting Standards);
6) Studies on protocols should follow the recommendations of SPIRIT (Defining standard protocol items for clinical trials);
7) Studies on prognosis and diagnosis should follow STARD (An Updated List of Essential Items for Reporting Diagnostic Accuracy Studies);
8) Reports and cases should follow CARE (Consensus-based Clinical Case Reporting Guideline Development);
9) Studies on clinical practice protocols should follow AGREE (a tool to improve reporting of clinical practice guidelines);
10) Qualitative studies should follow the SRQR (Standards for reporting qualitative research: synthesis of recommendations);
